Now more than ever, people are turning to natural household products to keep their homes “spic and span”. In addition to safety, there are plenty of reasons to consider these products as cleaning alternatives. Whether you are looking to save money or to simplify the number of products in your pantry closet, you should consider using these five staples as you tackle your next deep clean.

White vinegar is a very handy solution to have around the house. When diluted with water, it can be used to clean windows, walls, and even dishes, all in lieu of manufactured soap. To deep clean a dirty dishwasher when gunk has accumulated, fill the soap container full with vinegar, run on empty and at a high temp, and your appliance will be as good as new.

Lemons are one of the most versatile of all fruits. Not only are they used to add flavor to food and drinks, but they can be also be used to clean a number of household items. Because of the natural citric acid lemons produce, you can use them to clean anything from shower doors, to dishes to toilets. They can also be used to shine almost anything in your house, including furniture and countertops.

Baking soda

Baking soda has long been known for its ability to kill odors in the refrigerator and garbage areas of a kitchen. A lesser-known fact is that it can be used to clean kitchen surfaces, especially countertops and the kitchen sink. Combine it with vinegar to create a scouring agent to be applied to the most frequently used parts of your home, which will leave them bright and cleansed.

Unbeknownst to many, salt is a great alternative to dish soap when applied to a dirty pot, pan or other cooking mechanism. Simply fill the bottom of your dirty pot with oil of any kind, heat it up, and then add a little bit of kosher or course salt. Once you do this, a nice paste will form at which point you can scrub it like you would with soap. Finally, rinse with hot water, dry, and put away.
