As part of your spring cleaning, you might be considering a new kitchen faucet to spruce up your kitchen and give it a fresh look. There are so many brands, styles, and colors to choose from that you might have a hard time choosing one. Here are a few things to consider when selecting a new kitchen faucet.

Height and Reach

Kitchen faucets are available in a variety of heights and reaches. You want to choose a faucet that offers the best combination for your space. If you have large cabinets over your sink, you want to make sure that the height of the faucet doesn’t make the space look overcrowded.

Faucets with a high arc are all the rage right night but if you have a small sink, you don’t need something that high to reach all the corners. However, if you have a larger sink or one that’s deep, you might need a taller faucet that can reach deep, far away corners.

Kitchen Faucet Style

You need to choose a style before you start shopping for a new faucet. Take a few minutes to look around your kitchen and gauge your current style. There are some styles that you mix and match together and others that look awkward together. For example, you can add a modern shape and style faucet to your traditional kitchen, but it would look odd if your style is rustic farmhouse.

You might be using a new kitchen faucet to begin a slow renovation in your kitchen. If that’s the case, you need to choose the style that you want to create instead of the style that you currently have. Of course, your kitchen might look eclectic as you slowly switch the style.

Sprayer Options

You already know that you want a sprayer to reach the gunk that lurks in the corner of your sink, but there are so many kinds. You can choose between a side sprayer and one that pulls out from the faucet. The central sprayer is easier to use and helps keep your sink area looking tidy and efficient.

There are sprayers that turn on as soon as you pull them apart from the faucet while others require you to press a button or flip a lever to start a spraying action. You also want to ensure that when you’re done using the sprayer that it quickly and easily returns to the faucet fixture.

Number of Handles

Most faucets come with either one or two handles. With two handles, you use one to turn on and control the flow of water while the other handle provides hot or cold water. If you choose a faucet with only one handle, water flow and temperature are controlled with a single handle, making it very convenient in a kitchen.

Another thing to consider with handles is their length. It’s a good idea to measure the distance between the faucet and the wall or any obstruction behind it to ensure that you get the full range of movement for the handles. You don’t want the handle constantly bumping against the wall.

Number of Holes

Most sinks come with pre-drilled holes in them. There are typically two or three holes, and if your new faucet comes with fewer pieces to fill those holes than your previous faucet, then the holes need to be covered. Many faucets come with bridge pieces to cover a hole, but it’s a good idea to check the packaging if you’re going to need a cover to ensure it’s in there. For example, your old faucet had a side sprayer while your new one has a pull-down sprayer. The hole for the side sprayer is now empty.

Also, holes in the sinks aren’t uniformly located. Before buying a new faucet, you need to check the number of holes and their locations to ensure that your new faucet will look natural.

Kitchen Faucet Finish

When it comes to faucet finishes, there are typically only three to consider:

  • Chrome
  • Nickel
  • Bronze

The nickel finish can include other brushed metals. You don’t want your new faucet to stick out due to its finish. It’s a good idea to access the finish colors you’re already using in your kitchen, such as drawer handles, door knobs, and lighting fixtures. You can also take into account the color of your cabinets and appliances.

If you already have a mixture of finish colors in your kitchen, then you can opt to go with a finish that you have the most of already installed. Another option is to choose the one you prefer.

Choose Ceramic Valves

It’s a good idea when you’re picking out your new kitchen faucet, that you choose one that has ceramic valves. This type of valve can keep your faucet from dripping for decades to come. While other types of values may list as drip-free, they only remain that way for the first two or three years. Other types of valves simply can’t match the long-lasting durability of a ceramic valve. Also, the cost of ceramic is about the same as other types of valves.

Pricing

When it comes to picking out a new kitchen faucet, pricing should be one of the biggest concerns. You need to set a budget for your new faucet before you start looking. Kitchen faucet price tags range from $70 to $450 so there’s a lot of room to set a budget that you’re comfortable with before you start shopping.

If you spend too little, you may find yourself with a lower quality faucet that needs replacing. You want to measure the quality of the faucet against the price to find your niche for spending. Also, make sure that you don’t spend too much and go over budget, or you may regret it later on.
